Lukla Flight Information for Everest Three Passes Trekking Nepal

Planning your Everest trekking Nepal trip? Be aware that Lukla flight schedules are often impacted by weather delay, so it’s smart to add two extra days to your plan to avoid missing your return flight. The Kathmandu to Lukla route is scenic but highly sensitive to mountain weather.

In busy trekking months like March, April, May, October, and November, most Lukla flights operate from Ramechhap to Lukla, not directly from Kathmandu. Travelers must leave Kathmandu at 12:30 a.m. for a 5-hour drive to Ramechhap airport.

In other months, Kathmandu to Lukla flights usually operate without needing to go through Ramechhap. However, flight changes can still occur, so always stay flexible. Whether you’re heading to Everest Base Camp or following the best trek route in Nepal, keeping track of your Lukla flight is essential for a hassle-free Everest trekking Nepal experience.

Early in the morning, you’ll be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport to catch a thrilling flight to Lukla, one of the world’s most famous mountain airstrips.

The 35-minute flight offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas and the lush green valleys below. Upon landing at Lukla (2,850m), you will immediately feel the excitement of beginning your Everest trekking Nepal adventure. From Lukla, you’ll start trekking with your guide and porters, descending gently along the Dudh Koshi River toward Phakding

. The 3-4 hour trek passes through beautiful pine forests, quaint villages, and suspension bridges swaying over crystal-clear glacial rivers. Phakding (2,650m) is a small Sherpa village where you can rest in traditional teahouses, savor local Nepalese cuisine, and prepare mentally and physically for the challenging days ahead.

This day’s trek serves as the perfect introduction to the rugged and magnificent Everest region, easing your body into the altitude while surrounding you with pristine Himalayan nature. The soft chatter of Sherpa locals, the sound of rushing rivers, and the cool mountain air create an unforgettable first impression of your Everest Three High Passes Trek.

Spend the day slowly adjusting to the high altitude (3,440m) by walking through the vibrant streets of Namche Bazaar, visiting the Sherpa Museum to learn about local culture and mountaineering history.

For stunning views, hike to the Everest View Hotel, where you can see Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. This acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar helps your body adapt to the altitude and prepares you for the challenging trekking ahead, making it an essential part of the Everest Three Passes Trek itinerary.

Day 4Trek from Namche Bazaar to Thame (3,750m / 12,303 ft) — Into the Heart of Sherpa Heritage

The trek from Namche Bazaar to Thame is about 6.8 kilometers and typically takes around 6 hours. As you leave behind the bustling market town of Namche, the trail winds through terraced farmland and dense pine forests, gradually ascending to higher altitudes.

Along the way, you’ll pass ancient mani walls and prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze, symbols of deep Buddhist faith that permeate the region. Thame village is known for its rich Sherpa culture and history, being the birthplace of many famous mountaineers.

This peaceful settlement, nestled amid snow-capped peaks, offers trekkers a unique opportunity to experience traditional mountain life and absorb the tranquil atmosphere of the high Himalayas.

Day 5Trek from Thame to Lungden (4,500m / 14,764 ft) — Ascend to the High Alpine Zone

On this day, you will cover roughly 8 kilometers in about 6 hours, climbing steadily into the high alpine zone. The terrain becomes more rugged as vegetation thins, and you enter an environment dominated by rocky slopes, scattered boulders, and high-altitude flora.

The air grows thinner and cooler, and you’ll feel the physical demands of the climb more intensely. Lungden, perched at 4,500 meters, serves as an important acclimatization stop.

The small cluster of teahouses here provides welcome rest, warm meals, and stunning views of surrounding peaks like Cho Oyu and Shishapangma. The quiet, remote setting lets trekkers connect with the raw beauty of the Himalayas.

Day 6Trek from Lungden to Gokyo Lake (4,750m / 15,583 ft) via Renjo La Pass (5,446m / 17,867 ft) — Conquer Your First High Mountain Pass

This challenging day covers nearly 9 kilometers over approximately 8 hours, featuring your first major high-altitude pass—Renjo La, at an impressive 5,446 meters. The ascent to the pass involves steep, sometimes rocky trails that test your endurance and balance, but the effort is richly rewarded with awe-inspiring panoramic views.

From the summit, gaze upon the towering peaks of Everest, Makalu, and Cho Oyu glittering under the clear blue sky. After crossing the pass, a steep descent leads you into the peaceful Gokyo Valley. Here, the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, revered as sacred by locals, shimmer in the sunlight and offer a tranquil place to rest and reflect on your progress through this legendary trekking region.

Day 7Rest Day to Acclimatize at Gokyo and Morning Hike to Gokyo Ri (5,400m / 17,716 ft) — The Ultimate Himalayan Panorama

A well-earned rest day at Gokyo allows your body to adjust to the high altitude while you take in the breathtaking surroundings of this serene alpine village. The highlight of the day is an early morning hike to Gokyo Ri, a prominent viewpoint standing at 5,400 meters. The ascent, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours, is moderate but rewarding, offering spectacular 360-degree views of the Himalayas.

From this vantage point, you’ll see Everest’s majestic summit, the sprawling Ngozumpa Glacier—the largest glacier in Nepal—and the impressive peaks of Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning views make this an unforgettable experience in your Everest trekking adventure.

Day 8Trek from Gokyo to Thangnak (4,700m / 15,420 ft) — Journey Through Remote Alpine Wilderness

The landscape is strikingly raw, with rocky outcrops and expansive views of distant snow-covered peaks.

Thangnak is a small, quiet village perched at nearly 4,700 meters, offering basic but welcoming teahouses where trekkers can rest and prepare for the challenging days ahead. The clear mountain air and peaceful surroundings make this stretch a rejuvenating experience despite the altitude.

Day 9Trek from Thangnak (4,700m / 15,400ft) to Dzongla (4,855m / 15,930ft) via Cho La Pass (5,420m / 17,783ft)

This demanding day involves trekking about 16 kilometers over 6 to 7 hours, including crossing the formidable Cho La Pass at 5,420 meters. The trail to the pass is steep and rocky, sometimes icy, requiring steady footing and cautious steps. The challenge of the climb is intense, but the summit offers panoramic views of the Everest region’s rugged peaks and glaciers, making the effort worthwhile.

After the pass, you descend to Dzongla, a small mountain settlement where trekkers find shelter and warmth. Dzongla is a peaceful resting point, giving you time to recover from the day’s exertions in preparation for the journey ahead.

Day 10Trek from Dzongla to Lobuche (4,910m / 16,109 ft) — Trekking Deeper into the High Himalayas

On this moderate 7-kilometer trek lasting about 4 hours, you’ll continue through the stark and rocky landscape characteristic of the Everest region’s higher altitudes. The trail passes moraines and scattered prayer flags, with magnificent views of the Khumbu Glacier and surrounding towering peaks.

Lobuche, your destination, is a key stopover village for trekkers heading towards Everest Base Camp. It offers simple lodges, warm meals, and spectacular mountain scenery, providing a comfortable base amid the wild mountain environment.

Day 11 Trek from Lobuche (4,930m / 16,175ft) to Everest Base Camp (5,364m / 17,598ft) and back to Gorak Shep (5,185m / 17,010ft)

This iconic day involves trekking approximately 14 kilometers over 6 to 8 hours, starting with a steady ascent from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp. At 5,364 meters, Base Camp is a bustling hub of climbers preparing for summit attempts and offers close-up views of the Khumbu Icefall and the immense glaciers surrounding Everest.

After spending time at the base camp, you descend to Gorak Shep, the highest permanent settlement in the region, where trekkers spend the night. Gorak Shep provides basic accommodations and stunning mountain views, setting the stage for the next day’s sunrise hike.

Day 12 Hike to Kala Patthar (5,555m / 18,208 ft) Viewpoint and Trek Back to Lobuche — Experience Everest’s Best Panorama

Kala Patthar is renowned as the best viewpoint to witness Mt. Everest up close. The steep ascent takes about 3 hours and offers spectacular panoramic views of Everest’s summit, Lhotse, Nuptse, and the surrounding Himalayan giants. After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, you will descend approximately 7 kilometers back to Lobuche.

Here you can rest and recuperate. This day is a highlight of the trek, combining physical challenge with some of the most memorable and dramatic mountain vistas on the planet.

Day 13Trek from Lobuche to Chhukung (4,730m / 15,518 ft) via Kongma La Pass (5,535m / 18,159 ft) — Cross Your Final High Pass

This strenuous 14-kilometer trek takes 7 to 8 hours and includes crossing the Kongma La Pass at an altitude of 5,535 meters—the highest pass on the trek. The terrain is rugged and demanding, often covered with loose rocks and patches of snow or ice depending on the season.

The views from the pass are breathtaking, showcasing Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Ama Dablam peaks. After the descent, you reach Chhukung, a quiet village renowned for its scenic beauty and proximity to climbing routes for peaks like Island Peak.

Day 14Trek from Chhukung to Tengboche (3,855m / 12,648 ft) — Descend to the Spiritual Center of the Khumbu

Today’s trek covers around 12 kilometers in about 5 hours, descending through rhododendron and pine forests filled with the scent of wildflowers and pine needles. Tengboche is famous for its large Buddhist monastery, a spiritual hub for the Sherpa people and trekkers alike.

The monastery offers stunning views of Everest and Ama Dablam, and visiting it provides a meaningful cultural and spiritual experience. The descent is gentle compared to previous days, allowing you to relax while still taking in spectacular mountain scenery.

Day 15 Trek from Tengboche to Namche Bazaar (3,440m / 11,285 ft) — Return Through Vibrant Mountain Villages

This 10-kilometer trek takes roughly 5 hours, retracing your steps back to Namche Bazaar. The trail passes through lush rhododendron forests, suspension bridges, and several small Sherpa villages, each filled with colorful prayer flags and traditional stone houses.

Namche offers bustling markets, cafes, and a lively atmosphere, providing a sharp contrast to the remote villages you’ve passed. This return leg allows you to reflect on your journey while enjoying the comforts of a well-established mountain town.

Day 16Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,850m / 9,350 ft) — Final Descent to the Trailhead

The final trekking day covers around 20 kilometers in about 6 to 7 hours, descending steadily through forests and scattered settlements. The trail offers beautiful views of the lower hills and valleys as you leave behind the high mountains.

Lukla, the starting and ending point for many Everest treks, has a small airstrip and several guesthouses and cafes where trekkers celebrate completing their adventure. This day marks the end of your physically demanding but incredibly rewarding Himalayan journey.

Day 17Fly Back to Kathmandu or Manthali from Lukla — Reflect on Your Epic Himalayan Trek

Your unforgettable Everest region trek concludes with a scenic 40-minute flight back to Kathmandu or a 20-minute flight to Manthali, followed by a 5-hour drive to Kathmandu if you choose Manthali. The flight offers spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas and the remote mountain villages you traveled through.

Everest Three High Passes Trek Package Information

Arrival, Welcome, and Trek Start:

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a friendly representative from our team will warmly welcome you, holding a pamphlet with your name for easy identification. You will be greeted traditionally with a Khada scarf or a marigold garland, symbolizing good luck and hospitality. From the airport, you will be comfortably transferred to your hotel by private vehicle, where you can rest and prepare for your upcoming adventure.

The trek officially begins with a domestic flight to Lukla on the day of departure. During peak trekking seasons—March, April, May, September, October, and November—flights to Lukla may sometimes be redirected to Manthali Airport due to high demand or weather conditions.

In such cases, on the trek departure day, our guide will pick you up from your hotel around 12:30 am for a scenic five-hour drive to Manthali Airport, followed by a short 20-minute flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region.

In off-peak months—December, January, February, June, July, and August—flights to Lukla generally operate directly from Kathmandu. On your departure day, we will ensure timely transportation to Kathmandu Airport early in the morning for a 40-minute scenic flight to Lukla, setting the stage for your Everest Three High Passes Trek

Accommodations:

Throughout the 17-day trek, you will stay in carefully selected lodges that offer comfort and warmth amidst the rugged Everest region.

For the first five nights, accommodations include rooms with private attached bathrooms located in Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar (three nights). For the remaining eleven nights, you will stay in comfortable twin-sharing standard rooms in Thame, Lungden, Gokyo (two nights), Dzongla, Lobuche (two nights), Chhukung, Gorak Shep, Thangnak, and Pheriche.

Most lodges provide essential amenities such as hot showers, electricity for charging devices, and Wi-Fi access available for a small additional fee. These lodges offer a cozy refuge after a long day of trekking, allowing you to recharge for the next day’s journey.

Please note that accommodations and meals in Kathmandu before and after the trek are not included in this package, but the city offers a wide range of lodging options suitable for all budgets and preferences.

Meals:

Our Everest Three High Passes Trek package includes full-board meals with 17 breakfasts, 17 lunches, and 16 dinners. All meals are freshly prepared with high standards of hygiene and nutrition in mind. The menu features a variety of traditional Nepali, Asian, and Western dishes designed to keep your energy levels high during the demanding trek.

Recommended local specialties include Dal Bhat (a nutritious lentil soup served with rice), Momos (steamed or fried Tibetan-style dumplings), and Chowmein (stir-fried noodles). We encourage trekkers to maintain proper hydration with healthy drinks like green tea, ginger tea, and garlic soup, which are known for their warming and medicinal properties in high-altitude environments.

We advise avoiding non-vegetarian foods, dairy products, alcoholic beverages, and caffeinated drinks during the trek to minimize digestive issues and altitude sickness risks. Personal bills for additional items such as hot drinks (tea, coffee), cold drinks, alcoholic beverages, and snacks are excluded from the package and are payable directly to the lodges.

Luggage and Porter:

This trek package includes porter service with a luggage allowance of up to 9 kg per trekker. One porter will carry the combined luggage of two trekkers, with a maximum weight limit of 18 kg per porter. To make the most of this arrangement, we strongly recommend partnering with a fellow trekker and packing your gear together in a duffle bag with a capacity of over 60 liters.

This careful packing and sharing of porter services not only helps keep your individual loads light but also ensures that your essential trekking gear is transported safely, allowing you to focus fully on the breathtaking adventure ahead.

Facilities and Essentials for Everest Three High Passes Trek

Proper Hydration from Water:

We strongly advise against drinking untreated water from rivers, taps, or wells during the trek. While bottled water is available for purchase, to minimize plastic waste and protect the fragile environment, we recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and buying boiled or filtered water instead. Most lodges and shops along the trek route provide boiled or filtered water for a small fee.

For extra safety, using water purification pills is highly recommended to prevent waterborne illnesses. If you do not have purification pills, we can supply them to you before or during the trek.

Communication and connectivity:

Discovery World Trekking keeps daily contact with all trekking groups through their leaders using mobile networks. While local SIM cards are easily available in Kathmandu and suitable for personal use, mobile signals in high-altitude regions of the Everest trek may be weak or intermittent.

Rest assured, our team is always on standby to manage emergencies, ensuring your safety throughout the trek.

Travel Essentials

Visa Requirements:
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Nepal, which can be conveniently obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. The standard 30-day tourist visa costs USD 50. To apply, you need a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining and a passport-size photo.

Nationals from SAARC countries and China may be eligible for a free visa, while some countries require pre-approval before arrival. For detailed and updated visa information, visit the official Nepal Immigration website: https://www.immigration.gov.np/en.

Travel Insurance:

Travel insurance that covers medical expenses and emergency helicopter evacuation for high-altitude trekking (up to 5,550 meters) is mandatory. You must provide your insurance policy details at the time of booking.

We recommend you directly confirm with your insurance provider that helicopter rescue is included, rather than relying solely on website information.

Currency Exchange:
The official currency used in the trekking regions is Nepali Rupees (NPR). The approximate exchange rate is 1 USD = 133 NPR. You can exchange major foreign currencies at banks or authorized money exchange counters in Kathmandu.

ATMs in Kathmandu allow cash withdrawals up to NPR 35,000 per transaction, usually with an additional service fee. To avoid issues, bring new, crisp, and untorn notes, as banks may refuse old or damaged currency. Only the Indian 100-rupee note (INR 100) is legally accepted in Nepal.

Extra Expenses

While this Everest Three High Passes Trek package covers most trek-related costs, there are some additional expenses you should budget for. These include:

  • Meals and accommodations in Kathmandu before and after the trek
  • Extra meal courses, snacks, and beverages during the trek
  • Tips for guides, porters, and staff
  • Souvenirs and personal shopping

We recommend budgeting approximately USD 35 per trek day to comfortably cover these extras.

Trek Season and Weather Conditions for Everest Three High Passes Trek

The best seasons for trekking the Everest Three High Passes are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These periods offer clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and breathtaking mountain views. During spring, daytime temperatures at higher altitudes can reach around 20 °C, while nights can drop to approximately -5 °C. In autumn, daytime highs can climb to 25 °C, with nighttime temperatures falling as low as -10 °C.

Summer and Winter Trekking Conditions:

Trekking is also possible during summer (June to August) and winter (December to February), but these seasons come with challenges.

  • Summer: Daytime temperatures at high altitudes may rise up to 27 °C, with nighttime lows near 5 °C. However, summer coincides with the monsoon season, which brings heavy rains that can make lower trails slippery and increase the risk of landslides. Monsoon weather often leads to frequent flight delays or cancellations to Lukla.
  • Winter: Daytime temperatures can reach up to 15 °C, but nighttime temperatures may plunge as low as -20 °C at higher elevations. Snow and extreme cold can make trekking difficult, and some high passes might be inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.
Typical Day on the Everest Three High Passes Trek

Each day begins with an early breakfast before setting off on the trail around 7 to 8 AM. You will trek for about 3 to 4 hours in the morning, then pause for a lunch break and rest for approximately an hour. Afterward, you’ll continue trekking for another 2 to 3 hours in the afternoon. Once you arrive at your destination for the day, you’ll have free time to explore the area and soak in the surroundings.

Dinner is usually served around 7 PM, followed by a short briefing where your guide will share the plan for the next day. Evenings are perfect for unwinding at the lodge — whether that’s playing games, chatting with fellow trekkers, or simply relaxing.

Showing Appreciation in Nepal Trekking

In Nepal trekking culture, tipping is a respected way to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of your guides, porters, and support staff. While tips are not mandatory, they are highly appreciated and form an important part of the local trekking economy. We recommend that tips be given at the end of the trek and ideally pooled as a group contribution to fairly reward the entire team.

The amount of the tip should be proportional to the quality of service, the total trek cost, and the length of your journey. Your generosity helps maintain motivation and encourages continued excellence in trekking support and hospitality, ensuring every trekker receives the best possible experience in Nepal.
