Khopra Danda Trek Overview

The Khopra Danda Trek is one of the best off-the-beaten-path treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal, ideal for those seeking quiet trails, authentic village experiences, and breathtaking Himalayan views. This less-crowded route takes you through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, dense rhododendron forests, open alpine meadows, and dramatic ridgelines. The trek culminates at Khopra Danda (3,660 m) — a scenic ridge offering panoramic views of Annapurna South, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Tukuche Peak.

Your trekking adventure starts with a drive from Pokhara to Ghandruk, a picturesque village known for its cultural richness and traditional stone houses. From there, you hike through lush forests to Tadapani, then continue toward Bayeli Kharka, gradually gaining elevation. As the landscape changes from green hills to high-altitude pastures, you’ll reach the spectacular Khopra Ridge, a quiet and peaceful alternative to the crowded viewpoints on other treks.

One of the highlights of this trek is the optional day hike to Khayer Lake (4,660 m) — a sacred glacial lake that holds religious significance for Hindus and Buddhists. This day trip adds a challenging yet rewarding element to the trek and gives trekkers a chance to connect with the spiritual side of the Himalayas.

The descent takes you through Swanta village, known for its warm hospitality and local cheese production, then onward to Ghorepani. From here, a pre-dawn hike takes you to Poon Hill (3,210 m), a world-famous viewpoint offering one of the best sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The trek ends at Birethanti, where you’ll be picked up and driven back to Pokhara, a relaxing lakeside city perfect for unwinding after the journey.

This 6-day Khopra Danda Trek is perfect for nature lovers, culture seekers, and adventure enthusiasts looking to experience Nepal’s Himalayas without the crowds. With stunning Himalayan landscapes, rich local traditions, and varied terrain, this trek is a hidden treasure in the heart of the Annapurna region.

Khopra Danda Trek - 6 Days itinerary

Day 1Drive from Pokhara to Kimche/Ghandruk (1,940 m) and Trek from Ghandruk to Tadapani (2,700 m)

Your Khopra Danda Trek officially begins from the beautiful lake city of Pokhara, although a complimentary bus ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara is included in your trekking package. After spending the night in Pokhara, you’ll start your day with a scenic drive that takes around 3 to 4 hours, passing through Nayapul and continuing off-road to Kimche and Ghandruk.

Located at an elevation of 1,940 meters (6,364 feet), Ghandruk is a charming Gurung village famous for its stone-roofed houses, Buddhist monasteries, and panoramic views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range. From here, the trekking journey begins.

The trek from Ghandruk to Tadapani is approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) long and takes around 4 hours to complete. You’ll walk through serene rhododendron forests, cross small streams, and enjoy the sounds of birds and waterfalls. Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,555 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), and Lamjung Himal (6,931 m). The trail has few settlements, but there are teahouses available for short rests, particularly at Bhainsi Kharka.

Hotel Grand View Lodge in Tadapani offers comfortable accommodations with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Your stay includes three hearty meals each day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Day 2Trek from Tadapani (2,700 m / 8,860 ft) to Bayeli Kharka (3,450 m / 11,318 ft)

Embark on today’s journey by leaving the bustling village of Tadapani behind, venturing into the serene and less-traveled paths of the Annapurna region. The trek begins with a gradual ascent through dense rhododendron and oak forests, offering glimpses of the majestic Annapurna range. As you ascend, the trail opens up to reveal expansive meadows, providing a tranquil setting away from the more frequented routes. Continuing along the ridge, you’ll reach a small pass before descending through a forested area to arrive at Bayeli Kharka, a picturesque clearing at 3,450 meters (11,318 feet). This remote village offers panoramic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m / 26,795 ft), the seventh-highest mountain in the world, making it a perfect spot to relax and absorb the surrounding natural beauty.

The trek covers a distance of approximately 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles) and takes around 5 to 6 hours to complete. Overnight accommodations are arranged at a community lodge, where trekkers can experience the warmth of local hospitality. Standard meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, are provided, offering a taste of traditional Nepali cuisine.

Day 3Trek from Bayeli Kharka (3,450m / 11,318ft) to Khopra Danda (Ridge) (3,660m / 11,811ft)

Embark on today’s journey by descending through lush forests from Bayeli Kharka to reach the Chistibang pastures. After a brief rest, continue your ascent above the timberline, gradually approaching Khopra Danda. This ridge offers unobstructed panoramic views of some of the most iconic peaks in the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Notable mountains visible from this vantage point include Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Damphus Peak, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, and the picturesque village of Sikha nestled below. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as the Himalayan tahr (a wild goat) and the Danphe (Himalayan pheasant), Nepal’s national bird. The ridge also provides a view of the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. Overnight stay at Khopra Community Lodge, where you can relax and enjoy the serene mountain environment. Included standard meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 4Trek from Khopra Danda (Ridge) (3,660m / 11,811ft) to Swanta (2,214m / 7,874ft)

Today, you have the option to take a side trip to Khayar Lake, which is located at 4,665 meters and takes around five hours to reach. This lake is considered holy by Hindus, who believe that taking a dip in its waters grants Nirvana. After visiting Khayar Lake, you will return to Khopra and then descend to the village of Swanta. Swanta is well known for its community-run cheese factory, where you can explore local life and enjoy tasting the cheese made by the villagers.

You will spend the night at Hotel Candle Inn, a comfortable place to rest after the day’s trek. Standard meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided throughout the day.

Day 5 Trek from Swanta (2,214m / 7,874ft) to Ghorepani (2,880m / 9,350ft)

Leaving the peaceful village of Swanta behind, your trek today takes you toward Ghorepani. The trail descends through cultivated fields before crossing a small river on a suspension bridge. You will then ascend toward Chittre village, where the route meets the classic Annapurna Circuit trail. The trek continues uphill as you approach Ghorepani, a popular stop for trekkers with stunning mountain views.

You will stay overnight at Hotel Snow Land, which offers rooms with attached bathrooms for your comfort. Standard meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.

Day 6 Early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210m / 10,525ft), then trek to Birethanti (1,039m / 3,250ft), followed by a drive to Pokhara

Start the day early with a hike to Poon Hill, situated at 3,210 meters, to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including the iconic Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). This spot is a favorite for photographers and nature lovers who want to capture the magnificent Himalayan panorama. After enjoying the views and taking photos, you will descend back to Ghorepani and continue trekking to Birethanti.

From Birethanti, you will take a two-hour scenic drive to Pokhara, marking the end of your trek. Your overnight stay will be at Silver Oaks Inn, where rooms have attached bathrooms for your convenience. Breakfast and lunch are included on this day.
